Today’s guest is Danny Harvey. Danny is the Director of Financial Planning & Finance Faculty at Prairie View A&M University. He is also a professional speaker and financial advisor.

He came from humble beginnings where he didn’t go without, but he also didn’t realize how little they actually had. He was raised by a single-mother that taught him the principles of hard work and saving money. He became great at saving money even though he didn’t really know what he was saving it for.

While going to college was something he wanted to do, it was also something he was told that he was going to do. Danny majored in economics at Texas A&M. His plan was to work for an investment firm, get rich, and then eventually become a professor and financial advisor when he was old and gray. But, life doesn’t always go as we plan. He transitioned to a position as a professor and advisor far sooner than he thought and he isn’t looking back.

Today Danny will share with us more about the lessons he wished he would have listened to when he first heard them in college along with the lessons that he is working to teach high school and college students.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • Why it’s better to be wise and learn from someone else’s mistake instead of always using life and personal experience to learn lessons the hard way.
  • Why we need to start educating students about personal finances in high school instead of waiting until college courses. Danny talks about a program he started with this classes where the college students go into high school classrooms to educate the students.
  • Understanding that money is a tool and you need to know how to put that tool to work for you and your future. And, the sooner you do it the better it is.
  • The importance of having a fluid financial plan that is able to adapt as your life and goals change.

Word of the Day: Wisdom

I liked the way Danny defined wisdom as learning from someone else’s mistakes. Why learn financial mistakes the hard way? It can take a long time to recover from handling your finances wrong. That’s one reason regular discussions about money is so important.

The more you can learn from others the fewer hard lessons that are going to come your way. If you still feel stuck or have questions start asking everyone around you.
