Today’s guest is Dave Claffey, Head of Communications at the startup Earnin. Dave served in the National Guard before attending college. It took him a little time to find his path, but once he did he has worked hard at every job to reach the top and then move on to the next opportunity. He has his numbers set towards financial independence and early retirement and is well on his way.

Today Dave will share with us the ups and downs of his financial journey. He very recently paid off his last debt (minus a house) and has several side-hustles going to help him grow his investments.

In This Episode We Discuss

  • The difficulties of being the first person in the family to go to college.
  • How his time in the military helped him get out of debt and what caused him to go back in debt.
  • The 3 things that he tells people about getting their finances in order.
  • How the app Earnin differs from a payday loan advance and how they’re helping their customers.
  • What it means to work for a start-up.

The Word of the Day: Payday Loan

I do not encourage you to ever use a payday loan! Yes, it gives you quick access to cash, but the average APR on one of these loans is 400%. If money gets tight you don’t have extra to be throwing away on one of these loans. Borrowing from one of these predatory lenders is like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound.

To avoid ever having to consider borrowing start building an emergency fund right now while there is no emergency.
