Today’s guest is Sheria Smith, Civil Rights Attorney for the U.S. Board of Education. Sheria excelled at academics from a young age and used that gift to work her way up and out of Gary, Indiana.

At the age of 14, she attended a boarding school on the east coast to increase her chance of making it to an Ivy League school. It was this experience that showed her how money looks and spends.

Sheria didn’t let her advancement stop there. She graduated from Harvard with a degree in Government and eventually earned a law degree from the University of Texas.

Today Sheria will share with us more about what it was like growing up in a town where most people were struggling to make it financially along with the similarities and difference of those that she went to boarding school with.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • How sometimes helping family and friends the most financially isn’t always the way they want you to help them.
  • The difference between how people with new money behaved compared to those with old money.
  • The importance of understanding that credit cards aren’t always bad if you know how to use them.
  • The extra pressure she feels to rise above.
  • How to recover from financial mistakes.

Word of the Day: Nouveau Riche, which also means “new money”. Sheria talked about how she could tell the difference between old money and new money.

Old money acted like they didn’t have it because they were comfortable with it being there. New money liked to flaunt it and show off what they had. This is a good reminder that as you build wealth, especially if you aren’t used to having it you really need to think twice about how you’re spending it. You want to look like old money.

Don’t think you have to be flashy to prove you are making it, those that are truly wealthy aren’t worried about impressing others.
